Telegram is a popular instant messaging service that is available for mobile platforms and desktop or laptops. The three main operating systems that computer uses are Windows, Mac and Linux, and Telegram is available for all of them.

How to install

You don’t need to go on third party websites like that pesky Softonic or an ad ridden .torrent website, since the software is one hundred percent freeand its “front end” is even open-source, meaning that everyone can see its code, so you don’t have to be afraid of the software spying on your secret conversations.

To install it, you have to go to the official website telegram.org and search for the Telegram for PC/MAC/Linux version. Once you click on it, the website should automatically detect the OS you are using and display the version you need.

If you think that the website is displaying the wrong version of Telegram, or you simply want to download another, you can click on “Show all platforms”you would see the following:

Get Telegram for Windows: Select this option if you have Windows, it will download the installer file .exe which should guide you through the process of the installation. Underneath this version it the “Portable version for Windows” which is the same, only that it does not need to be installed, just extract and use, but if you are not sure about it, go with the normal version.

Get Telegram for OS X: Once you click on it will download the .dmg file to use on your Mac, you can alternatively use the Mac App Store version, which just leads to the iTunes store in order to download it from there.

Get telegram for Linux 64bit / 32bit: Choosing either of them downloads the .tar.xz files, that you need to decompress in order to use, if you are not sure wether to download the 64 or the 32 bit version (yes, they are different) you can search online how to do this, since it varies from which Linux-based system are you using, but the easiest and more certain way is just open the console and type “uname –m” which will show a message where you can see if your system is 64bit (x86_64) or 32bit (i686 or i386).

Once you have downloaded and installed the correct version, you are ready to open it. Telegram will then ask for a phone number, just enter your real phone number, and it will send a code, after that you just put your name and you are ready to add contacts and start chatting or, is you used Telegram before, you can synchronize your contact and non secret conversations.
